Students from the University of Ibadan (UI) staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, voicing their dissatisfaction over the ongoing 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
UCH, the teaching hospital where UI medical students undergo practical training, has been without power for over two months due to outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
The electricity supply was cut off in March 2024 after IBEDC disconnected the hospital for failing to pay its electricity bills.
This was the second disconnection, as UCH’s power was initially severed in November 2023 for the same issue, and it has not been restored since.
Led by the President of the Students’ Union (SU), Bolaji Aweda, the protesting students expressed frustration with the situation, which they say directly affects their studies.
Aweda told reporters: “We are protesting against this ongoing issue. Our students have been directly impacted by the power outage. For 82 days, UCH has been without light, all due to their failure to pay the electricity bill to IBEDC. The company has made it clear that they will not restore power until the debt is settled.”
