On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal admitted all documentary evidence presented by Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, in his petition challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the Edo State governorship election.
According to Politics Nigeria, at the hearing for Ighodalo’s petition, marked EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, the Tribunal accepted over 1,000 documents submitted by the petitioner, despite objections raised by the counsels for INEC and Senator Okpebholo. The documents included Certified True Copies (CTC) of INEC’s result declaration forms, EC8A-E, as well as the LGA summary of results from the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State.
Ken Mozia, SAN, the lead counsel for Ighodalo, explained that the documents had been thoroughly verified in the presence of legal representatives from all parties involved and the Registrar before being formally tendered in court.
Despite objections from Kanu Agabi (SAN), Onyechi Ikpeazu, and VC Dewigwe, the counsels for the respondents, the Tribunal ruled in favor of admitting the documentary evidence.
With the acceptance of these documents, the petitioners are now set to proceed with presenting oral evidence to support their case.
