The Governor of Niger State, Muhammad Umaru Bago, has announced that public primary and secondary schools across the state are no longer allowed to charge Parents Teachers Association (PTA) fees.
Bago made the announcement during a visit to Sarkin Pawa in Munya Local Government Area on Thursday, January 16, 2025, as part of his ongoing project monitoring tour.
He emphasized that the government would now cover the PTA fees for all students in public schools.
The governor instructed school administrators to stop collecting PTA fees from parents and warned that those who defy the directive would face disciplinary action.
He also encouraged parents to ensure their children, particularly girls, are enrolled in school and assured them that issues such as school uniforms should not prevent children from attending classes.
“Let your children go to school. School uniforms should not be an excuse for any child not attending school. If any teacher sends a child home because of this, report them, and they will be dismissed,” he said.
Governor Bago also expressed satisfaction with ongoing road construction projects in the area, urging contractors to complete them on time. He promised further development, including building a road from Sarikin Pawa to Kaduna State, constructing a modern market, and improving access to clean drinking water and primary health care facilities, Guardian reports.
Local officials, including the Chairman of Munya Local Council, Aminu Najumi, and the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barrister Moses Magaji, praised the governor for his commitment to development and security in the region. They noted that the area is experiencing peace, thanks in part to the increased presence of security personnel.
