FG Responds to Emir Sanusi’s Comments, Calls for Unity Amid Economic Reforms

The Federal Government has reacted to recent remarks made by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II regarding the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to Politics Nigeria, during a public event in Lagos, the former Central Bank Governor acknowledged the necessity of the reforms but expressed his decision to refrain from supporting the government’s initiatives.

In a statement, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, voiced disappointment over Emir Sanusi’s comments. While the Emir is entitled to offer critiques, Idris noted that his statements appeared to be driven by personal grievances.

“It is disheartening that reforms, which are widely recognized as vital—even by Emir Sanusi himself—are now being subtly criticized due to a shift in loyalty. With his background in economics, His Highness should contribute constructively instead of allowing personal sentiments to cloud his judgment,” the statement read.

The government underscored the importance of critical reforms, such as the unification of exchange rates and the removal of fuel subsidies, stressing that they are essential for Nigeria’s economic recovery. Idris acknowledged that although these changes present short-term challenges, they have already yielded positive results, including increased investor confidence, improved fiscal sustainability, and a reduction in debt service-to-revenue ratios.

“Rebuilding Nigeria demands unity, focus, and sacrifices from all parties involved. It is crucial that respected leaders refrain from rhetoric that undermines public trust and instead support the collective goal of a prosperous nation,” the Minister added.

The government further urged Emir Sanusi to place the national interest above personal grievances and actively support efforts to revitalize Nigeria’s economy.

“This is a critical moment for our country, and what is needed now is collaboration, not distractions,” Idris emphasized.

In conclusion, the government reiterated its commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity, and expressed its openness to constructive dialogue with all stakeholders who seek to contribute to Nigeria’s progress.
