The Lagos State Police Command has arrested seven suspects for allegedly robbing and murdering two Uber drivers in separate incidents in the Lekki and Ajah areas of Lagos State.
According to NAN, the Commissioner of Police, Olarenwaju Ishola, disclosed this during a press briefing on the achievements of the command. He revealed that the suspects were part of two different gangs involved in the killings.
Mr. Ishola explained that on January 9, four suspects—Emeka Akwara (19), David Segun (21), Samuel Ariori (21), and Lukman Ariori (19)—requested an Uber ride from Chevron in Lekki to Obalende. Upon reaching a secluded area, they attacked the driver, stabbing him multiple times in the neck in an attempt to steal his car.
The suspects failed to escape with the vehicle as a good Samaritan and passersby intervened, leading to the immediate arrest of two suspects. Further investigations led to the capture of the remaining two. The victim’s body was deposited at Mainland Hospital Yaba, and a Toyota Camry with registration number AGL 650 HN, along with knives, was recovered from the scene.
In another case, Mr. Ishola said three suspects—Edmond Julius (34), Abdullahi Umar (32), and Saturday Oke (40)—kidnapped and killed an Uber driver, Oluwaseyi Fowler, in September. The suspects robbed him of his Toyota Camry, which they sold to a criminal receiver. They later led the police to recover the decomposed body of the driver and the stolen vehicle.
The commissioner confirmed that all seven suspects have been charged to court. He also advised ride-hailing drivers to be vigilant and cautious about their passengers.
“Do not carry more than one passenger at a time if possible. Insist on searching your passenger, and make sure they sit in the front seat,” Mr. Ishola said.
He added that the command plans to organize a security briefing for drivers to share safety tips and precautionary measures, noting that this was the third reported case of such incidents in three months.
