A devastating accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at Eleyele Bus Stop in Ibadan, Oyo State, when a truck loaded with granite lost control and crashed into a busy motor park. The crash resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
According to Vanguard, eyewitnesses reported that the truck first struck a group of roadside traders before veering into the park, where it hit waiting passengers. The scene was chaotic, with people scrambling to help victims as panic ensued.
The driver of the truck fled the scene, trying to escape from an angry mob, which further complicated the aftermath of the incident.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts
Rescue operations are still in progress as authorities work to clear the wreckage and evacuate the victims. The exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, but emergency responders are focused on removing the truck to prevent further accidents and restore normal traffic flow.
FRSC Confirms Incident
Rosemary Alo, the Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the tragic event in a phone interview.
She highlighted that roadside traders had been previously warned about the dangers of conducting business in such high-traffic areas.
“If they had adhered to the warnings, the loss of lives could have been minimized,” Alo said.
Measures to Prevent Future Accidents
Alo also mentioned that the FRSC, in collaboration with the local government, would enforce stricter regulations to prevent street trading in the area, aiming to reduce the risk of similar accidents in the future.
