Mrs. Mariam AbdulLateef has filed for divorce at an Ilorin Area Court, accusing her husband, AbdulLateef Tahjudeen, of neglecting her marital needs for seven years.
According to Vanguard, Mariam, who resides at 144 Cemetery Road, Irewolede Area, Ilorin, said she married Tahjudeen in 2016 under Islamic law. Their union is blessed with a seven-year-old daughter.
She told the court that her husband abandoned their marital bed after the birth of their child and has refused to fulfill his responsibilities as a husband.
“He doesn’t share the same room with me or touch me. Anytime I confront him about it, he tells me to leave if I’m no longer interested in the marriage,” Mariam said.
The plaintiff asked the court to dissolve the marriage, citing emotional and psychological distress caused by her husband’s neglect and constant accusations of infidelity.
“My husband accuses me of having extramarital affairs, yet he refuses to touch me. His behavior is affecting my mental health,” she added.
In his defense, Tahjudeen admitted to facing health challenges, which he said had affected his ability to meet his wife’s needs. However, he expressed his love for Mariam and appealed to her for patience as he works on overcoming his condition.
Presiding Judge Hammad Ajumonbi emphasized the importance of intimacy in marriage and advised both parties to resolve their issues amicably. He urged Mariam to show more patience and encouraged the husband to make efforts to mend the situation.
The case was adjourned to February 20 for a report on their settlement attempts.
