The Nigerian Police Force has refuted claims by social media influencer Martins “VeryDarkMan” Otse that N180 million was stolen from his NGO’s account, stating that the matter was never reported to them.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, dismissed Mr. Otse’s assertion that the police were investigating the alleged theft.
“The FCT Police Command is not aware of any case involving VDM’s missing funds and is not conducting any investigation into it,” Ms. Adeh stated. “The individual in question should clarify where the matter was reported, as there is no record of such a case with the FCT Police Command.”
Mr. Otse had earlier claimed that hackers had stolen N180 million from his NGO’s account and that law enforcement was working on the case. In an Instagram post, he said, “Somebody hacked into the NGO website, and ₦180 million is missing. Thankfully, we’ve tracked the person, and one suspect has been arrested.”
He also shared a video showing an officer identified as Joseph, alleging the officer was involved in the investigation and that they were heading to Plateau State to apprehend the culprits.
However, the spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, Alfred Alabo, also denied any knowledge of the case. “The case has not been reported to our command,” he said.
The situation has sparked mixed reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning how hackers could access the NGO’s account through its website. The controversy continues to unfold as calls for further clarification grow.
