The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, announced the arrest of police officers in Ogun State who allegedly demanded payment before assisting in the search for a missing seven-year-old girl, Mercy Akande.
Adejobi revealed on Saturday that Akande, the daughter of a Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator, was reported missing after allegedly being abducted by a male customer of her mother.
The incident occurred on December 23 and was first shared on social media on December 25 by a user named Miyakee. According to Miyakee, the suspect, a regular customer, had developed a rapport with Akande, frequently buying her food and giving her money. On the morning of the abduction, the man asked Akande to buy water for him. Upon her return, he intercepted her and disappeared with her, while her mother, occupied with other customers, remained unaware until it was too late.
The family reported the case to the police in Sango, Ogun State, but an officer allegedly demanded a N40,000 payment before taking action—N10,000 for filing the report and N30,000 for tracking the suspect.
In response, Adejobi assured the public that the Ogun State Police Command was actively pursuing the case and was confident that the child would be located soon. He condemned the actions of the officers involved, confirming their detention and promising disciplinary action.
“We have zero tolerance for such unprofessional and inhumane conduct. The victim’s family is encouraged to continue cooperating with the police to resolve this case,” Adejobi stated.
