Sanwo-Olu Showcases Lagos Waterways at 2024 Boat Regatta, Calls for Investments

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on investors to explore the vast potential of the state’s waterways during the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, a spectacular celebration of Lagos’ rich aquatic and cultural heritage.

Accompanied by his wife, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, his wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, and other dignitaries, Governor Sanwo-Olu led a vibrant event held on Saturday in Victoria Island and other parts of the state.

The regatta featured dazzling displays of decorated boats from the five Ibile divisions, thrilling rowing competitions, and captivating live performances, offering attendees an unforgettable experience of Lagos’ maritime culture.

During the event, the Governor and other officials embarked on a tour of Lagos waterways to highlight their untapped potential for tourism, recreation, and economic development.

Speaking after the tour, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the regatta as a celebration of Lagos’ unique connection to its waterways, emphasizing the need to harness this natural resource for sustainable growth.

“This event not only reflects our cultural heritage but also underscores the importance of our waterways as vital assets for transportation, tourism, and economic prosperity,” he said. “With one-third of Lagos surrounded by water, our administration remains committed to developing this ecosystem for the benefit of all.”

Sanwo-Olu added that the regatta aligns with his administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S Plus agenda, which promotes tourism and the creative economy as drivers of socio-economic development.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, praised the regatta for showcasing Lagosians’ dedication to preserving their heritage.

“This year’s theme, ‘Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,’ highlights the critical role waterways play in our identity and history,” she said. “Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision for advancing waterway infrastructure and tourism is transforming Lagos into a global destination.”

The day’s festivities concluded with electrifying performances from artists including Niniola, Atawewe, Pheelz, and 9ice, further cementing Lagos’ reputation as a hub for culture and innovation.

The 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta has once again positioned the state as a beacon of tourism, culture, and investment, leaving attendees inspired by its dynamic vision and vibrant heritage.
