Former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, has expressed grave concern over the increasing levels of poverty in Nigeria, which he believes are contributing to the deadly stampedes at food distribution events in Abuja, Ibadan, and Okija, where several lives were tragically lost.
In a statement shared on his X page, Chidoka wrote: “They died because they were hungry,” reflecting on the heartbreaking loss of life caused by extreme poverty.
Chidoka highlighted the alarming poverty levels across the country, warning that many Nigerians now face a bleak future. He recalled the experience of a woman who survived the Abuja stampede, arriving at 5 am with her daughter from Nasarawa State. Despite being injured in the chaos, her primary concern was her family’s lack of food. “What will my family eat this week?” she asked, symbolizing the desperate plight of many Nigerians who are struggling to meet basic needs.
Chidoka called for urgent collective action, urging Nigerians to embrace the philanthropic efforts of individuals like Ernest Azudialo, Sir Emeka Offor, Emma Bishop Okonkwo, and Prince Arthur Eze. He suggested that citizens share their resources by distributing food, supporting small businesses, and helping others in need.
“Let’s build a Coalition of Hope to renew our common humanity and shared prosperity,” Chidoka appealed, emphasizing that waiting for government intervention is no longer a viable solution.
He concluded with a heartfelt prayer for those who lost their lives in the stampedes, asking for mercy and grace for their souls. As the Christmas season approaches, Chidoka urged Nigerians to pause and consider those struggling to secure food and to take action that could make a meaningful difference in their lives.
