The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has clarified that state governors lack the legal authority to dismiss or suspend local government chairmen from office.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Fagbemi pointed out that such actions contradict constitutional provisions protecting the autonomy of local governments in Nigeria.
This statement comes amidst recent decisions by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to suspend several local government chairmen.
Fagbemi stressed that such moves undermine democratic principles and violate the rule of law.
According to the AGF, only actions aligned with the constitution can determine the tenure of elected local government officials.
