The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has detained the manufacturer of a recalled batch of Deekins Amoxicillin 500mg capsules following reports of adverse drug reactions.
NAFDAC Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, announced the development during a news conference in Lagos on Tuesday. The recalled batch, with lot number 4C639001, was allegedly produced by Ecomed Pharma Ltd. and marketed by DevineKings Pharmaceutical Ltd. The recall, issued on December 11, was prompted by reports from a hospital where three patients experienced severe reactions after taking the drug.
Adeyeye explained that the production was handled by a contract manufacturer who failed to notify NAFDAC, a violation of regulations. “Before you agree to do contract manufacturing for somebody, we must know. Neither of them told us, so we shut them down,” she said.
She further noted that the manufacturer claimed to have produced only a limited quantity for registration purposes, but the widespread distribution of the product suggested otherwise. “The manufacturer is already in custody, and the drugs are being tested in our laboratory to determine their contents and whether further charges will follow,” Adeyeye added.
Amoxicillin is a commonly used antibiotic for treating bacterial infections such as tonsillitis, pneumonia, and infections of the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract.
Investigations into the case are ongoing as NAFDAC continues its efforts to ensure compliance and protect public health.
