The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, has described virtual learning as a crucial measure necessitated by the ongoing renovation of student hostels.
In an interview with Unilag Sun, Professor Ogunsola highlighted the challenges posed by online learning but maintained that it is indispensable for broadening access to education in Nigeria. She revealed that the current university system accommodates only 2 million students out of the 81 million Nigerians aged 15 to 30.
Citing statistics, she noted that while the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) enrols 500,000 students, over 260 other universities cater to the remaining 1.5 million. “If we want to educate the young population, the current system cannot handle it. Online learning is part of the solution,” she remarked.
Acknowledging that virtual learning cannot entirely replace physical classes, the Vice-Chancellor emphasised its complementary role. “We need to use both online and in-person methods to create a more inclusive education system,” she stated.
Professor Ogunsola also addressed the transportation challenges confronting students, noting the difficulties some face in attending classes. “Many students struggle with getting to class. Not everyone lives in Lagos. Should we close for six months or continue learning online despite the inconvenience?” she queried.
She further stressed the practical need for online learning amidst infrastructural and data challenges. “We had to make this decision. We cannot have students living in poor conditions while attending lectures,” she added.
According to her, virtual learning is a permanent aspect of the education system that should be integrated with traditional teaching methods to foster a more inclusive and sustainable future in education.
