Dangote Refinery Commences Petrol Exports to African countries

By Bayero Ade

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially commenced exports of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, to several African countries, including Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa.

This significant achievement was announced by Dr. Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, during a recent visit by Japan’s Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, and a delegation from the Japanese business community.

Dr. Edwin highlighted the refinery’s expanding global presence, stating, “In recent weeks, we have exported petrol to several African nations. Our diesel is reaching global markets, and our jet fuel is gaining ground in Europe. These exports showcase the international competitiveness of our products.”

He emphasized the refinery’s strategic role in tapping into Africa’s crude oil resources for local refining, which aims to foster industrial development, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

The facility, conceived by Nigerian entrepreneur Aliko Dangote, reflects the country’s local expertise, as it was designed and built entirely by Nigerian professionals.

Dr. Edwin also pointed out that the Dangote Refinery is the largest single-train refinery in the world and that Dangote Industries Limited served as the project’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor.

He also expressed a willingness to explore partnerships, especially with Japanese companies, noting the integration of Japanese technology into the refinery, fertilizer plant, and other facilities.

“There is vast potential for collaboration with Japan, given their leadership in technological innovation. Our facilities already incorporate advanced robotics and state-of-the-art equipment, and we are constantly seeking the latest technologies,” Edwin added.

The Japanese delegation praised the refinery as a symbol of Nigeria’s industrial and technological progress. Ambassador Suzuki Hideo described the refinery as an engineering marvel that positions Nigeria as a technological leader in Africa.

Takashi Oku, Managing Director of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), commended the refinery’s scale and innovation, calling it a national pride and a gateway to Africa’s economic future.

Masahiro Tsuno, Managing Director of Itochu Nigeria Limited, referred to the refinery as a “miracle” for being the world’s largest refinery developed by a single investor, and expressed interest in exploring potential collaborations in sectors like polypropylene and other petroleum derivatives.

The Dangote Refinery and its related petrochemical projects are set to significantly boost Nigeria’s downstream industries, increase GDP, generate employment, and reduce foreign exchange outflows, solidifying Nigeria’s position as a leader in Africa’s energy sector.
