Toby Okechukwu, former Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and immediate past Chief of Staff to the Deputy Speaker, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a resignation letter dated December 6, 2024, and addressed to the PDP chairman of his ward—Owelli/Amoli/Ugbo/Ogugu Ward in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State—Okechukwu expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it provided during his political career.
Okechukwu, who represented the Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency of Enugu State in the 7th, 8th, and 9th National Assemblies, acknowledged the PDP’s role in his political journey. He said, “I write to notify you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party and to express my profound gratitude to the party for the platform it gave me to represent the people of Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.”
Highlighting his contributions during his tenure, Okechukwu noted his roles as Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Chairman of the Committee on Works, and Deputy Minority Leader. He also emphasized his involvement in significant infrastructure projects, such as the Second Niger Bridge, Abuja-Kano Road, and Lagos-Ibadan Road, as well as the successful passage of the COREN Bill, which aimed to enhance engineering practices in Nigeria.
Reflecting on his service, he stated, “I am hopeful that, going forward, we will continue to do our best for the common good of our people.”
Okechukwu’s resignation follows his recent appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Executive Director of Projects for the South East Development Commission. His departure from the PDP marks a new chapter in his political career, with many viewing his appointment as a strategic role in advancing development in the South East region.
