The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has ramped up efforts to tackle unauthorized operations in the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) sector in Akwa Ibom State.
This initiative was emphasized during a meeting on Thursday between the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Bakshar Hussaini, and NMDPRA’s Coordinator, Mr. Ikechukwu Eseka, in Eket.
Eseka expressed concerns over the dangerous practices of illegal LPG retailers, including the transfer of gas from one cylinder to another at various filling stations and refilling plants. He stressed that these activities are both unsafe and illegal, carrying legal consequences.
The coordinator reiterated NMDPRA’s commitment to ensuring compliance with regulations, urging gas plant owners not to supply LPG to unlicensed operators. He also called on marketers to ensure they are properly registered or have renewed their licenses to operate legally within the state.
Additionally, Eseka mentioned that NMDPRA is focusing on individuals and organizations with storage tanks exceeding 500 liters, ensuring they are properly registered and adhere to safety standards.
While acknowledging the NSCDC’s support in curbing illegal practices, Eseka emphasized the importance of continued collaboration to enhance public safety.
In response, NSCDC Commandant Hussaini highlighted the need for joint efforts to regulate the uncontrolled sale of LPG. While recognizing the economic challenges retailers face, he urged NMDPRA to exercise empathy in enforcement to avoid worsening public hardship. He also warned against selling cooking gas from residential properties, citing serious environmental and safety risks.
Both parties agreed to strengthen their cooperation to protect the public from the dangers posed by illegal LPG operations.
