The Nigerian Senate has issued an arrest warrant against the management of Julius Berger Construction Company for failing to attend a scheduled hearing. The warrant was issued on Thursday, December 12, after the company ignored multiple invitations to appear before the Senate Committee on Works.
The motion, brought by Senator Osita Ngwu of Enugu West, raised concerns about the company’s numerous failed contracts across the country. Ngwu emphasized the need for an investigation into Julius Berger’s track record, pointing to several incomplete or substandard projects undertaken by the company.
Ngwu stated, “When a committee summons any entity and they fail to appear, the proper course of action is to report it to the presiding officer, who can then issue an arrest warrant.”
Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central also supported the motion, reinforcing the Senate’s constitutional right to summon individuals or companies as part of its investigative duties.
Despite opposition from former governor Adams Oshiomhole, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed the issuance of the arrest warrant, escalating the matter and signaling the Senate’s commitment to holding companies accountable for their performance in public contracts.
