The Edo State Assets Verification Committee, headed by Governor Monday Okpebholo, has raised alarm over the significant inflation of the contract cost for the reconstruction of the Benin-Abraka Road Phase 1C.
Initially awarded for N8 billion, the contract was revised upward to N16.4 billion under the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki. This revelation was made by the Sub-committee on Physical Assets and Infrastructure during an inspection of the 17.5-kilometer road project.
Engr. Ifiokebong Ekong, the project manager for Nsik Engineering Company Limited, confirmed that the project, initially awarded in May 2023, began in September 2023. The original agreement mobilized the contractor with N2.9 billion, representing 25% of the initial N8 billion sum. However, the contract was revised twice in 2024—first to N12 billion and then to N16.4 billion by June.
Engr. Abass Braimah, a subcommittee member, criticized the 100% increase, questioning the justification for such drastic revisions.
“It is unheard of for a project to move from N8 billion to N12 billion and then to N16 billion without substantial changes in the job specifications. Everything remains the same, so what explains this inflation?” he remarked.
Subcommittee Chairman Patrick Obahiagbon linked the inflated costs to alleged political motives. He cited a petition from concerned Edo citizens suggesting that the contract adjustments were made to fund the September 21, 2024, governorship election.
“The timing of these revisions, just months before the election, raises red flags. It appears funds were diverted for political purposes, which is deeply troubling,” Obahiagbon stated.
He added that the committee would recommend a deeper investigation into the matter to uncover the full extent of any mismanagement or corruption.
This development has sparked public outcry, with many demanding accountability and transparency in the management of state resources.
