The Senate has officially declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo for Edo Central vacant following his inauguration as the Governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024.
This decision is in line with the 1999 Constitution, which states that a lawmaker’s seat is vacated when they assume another public office.
The declaration was prompted by a letter from Senator Abba Moro, the Minority Leader, who pointed out the constitutional requirement for the Senate to declare the seat vacant.
The letter also urged the Senate President to inform the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to arrange for a by-election.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the vacancy and directed INEC to organize a by-election to ensure continued representation for the district in the Senate.
As the seat becomes vacant, Okpebholo bid farewell to his fellow senators, thanking them for their support and promising to represent the Senate well in his new role as governor.
