The Okuama community in Delta State’s Ughelli South Local Government Area is engulfed in sorrow and unrest following the death of its treasurer, Dennis Okugbaye, while in military detention.
This tragedy comes just days after the President-General, Pa James Oghoroko, reportedly passed away under similar circumstances.
Both men were among several community leaders detained by the military in August 2024 after the killing of 17 soldiers during a peace mission aimed at resolving a land dispute with the neighboring Okoloba community.
I’mThe military’s subsequent raid left Okuama in ruins, forcing many residents to seek refuge in a displacement camp.
Okugbaye’s death has reignited protests by grieving community members.
Youths and women have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the release of detained leaders and the return of Pa Oghoroko’s remains.
They warned of drastic actions if their demands are not met.
Meanwhile, human rights groups and civil society organizations have condemned the prolonged detention and alleged torture of Okuama leaders.
Advocates are calling for the immediate release of all detainees and an investigation into the deaths, labeling the situation a breach of fundamental rights.
