Akume urges Northern politicians, including Atiku, to wait until 2031 for Presidency

George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has advised northern politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, to postpone their presidential ambitions until 2031.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television, Akume explained that the presidency should not return to the north until after President Bola Tinubu’s second term, which will conclude in 2031. He called on northern politicians eyeing the presidency in 2027 to make way for southern candidates in the upcoming election.

Akume emphasized that President Tinubu, as a southerner, should be given the opportunity to serve his second term, and it would be inappropriate for northern politicians to push for the presidency before 2031.

He stated, “If it is God’s will for Atiku Abubakar to become president, even at the age of 90, he will have his chance. But for now, he and others from the north should look beyond 2027.”

The SSG’s comments reflect a broader political stance favoring southern leadership for the 2027 election cycle.
