Sowunmi reveals Atiku’s uncertainty about 2027 Presidential bid

By Bayero Ade

Segun Sowunmi, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaigns, has revealed that he has twice asked Atiku about his intentions regarding the 2027 presidential race.

Sowunmi shared that Atiku is still in a period of deep reflection, carefully considering his next steps before making any decision.

“I have a great love and respect for Atiku Abubakar,” Sowunmi said. “I’ve asked him twice, ‘Are you running again? Or are you done? If you’re running, what happens to the structure we’ve built? If you’re not, we’ll need to adjust our plans.’ He didn’t give a direct answer, remaining quiet and reflective. He hasn’t said ‘no,’ nor has he said ‘yes,’ and I respect that.”

Sowunmi further emphasized that given Atiku’s past experience, including the challenges and setbacks he has faced, it is understandable for the former Vice President to take his time before making a decision. “Anyone who has faced the difficulties Atiku has should take a step back and think carefully before committing to another run,” Sowunmi explained.

Though Atiku has not publicly declared his position, his body language suggests he may be considering another run for the presidency. Atiku has previously contested the presidency six times: in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023.
