PDP crisis deepens as Wike’s faction targets Atiku’s supporters

By Bayero Ade

The crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has worsened, with the faction loyal to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike intensifying efforts to marginalize allies of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Sources within the party revealed that Wike’s camp is preparing to take stern disciplinary actions, including suspensions and expulsions, against members at the state, local government, and ward levels who oppose their faction.

This move follows the faction’s strong backing of the embattled acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, whose leadership has faced increasing criticism. Insiders say that Wike’s supporters are focused on strengthening their hold on the party by neutralizing opposition, particularly those who have been vocal in their criticism of Damagum’s leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC).

One of the targets of this push is Ikenga Ugochinyere, a prominent PDP lawmaker known for his vocal opposition to the current leadership. “There is a clear and deliberate strategy to target party members and even public figures who stand against their interests,” a party insider stated.

The ongoing discord within the party has also led to some NWC members reducing their attendance at meetings. Many are reportedly waiting for the establishment of a National Elective Convention planning committee, expected to be formed next year.

Meanwhile, the crisis has caused a further split within the PDP Governors’ Forum. Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba) are aligned with Wike in supporting Damagum’s leadership. On the other hand, Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Sim Fubara (Rivers), and Ademola Adeleke (Osun) are opposed to Damagum continuing in an acting capacity.
