The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled a high-level meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in January 2025 as part of efforts to resolve the party’s internal crisis.
This was disclosed by the BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, during an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
Wabara emphasized that the meeting is critical to restoring unity and resolving the leadership disputes that have plagued the party in recent months.
The BoT expressed disappointment with the National Working Committee (NWC), led by Umar Damagum, for its repeated failure to convene the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. This delay has drawn widespread criticism, with some members questioning Damagum’s leadership and calling for his resignation.
Wabara, addressing the BoT, said: “We meet today under challenging, self-inflicted circumstances, driven by our collective concern for the state of our great party. As custodians of the PDP’s conscience and legacy, we must ensure that this institution remains a beacon of hope for democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
He described the delayed NEC meetings as a breach of trust among party members.
“It is deeply disappointing that the NWC has continuously failed to convene a NEC meeting as promised. While challenges are expected in governance, fulfilling commitments is non-negotiable. The NEC must meet to address pressing issues and define a clear direction for the party.”
Wabara urged party leaders to prioritize collective goals over personal ambitions, warning that the ongoing crisis could damage the PDP’s image and its ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The BoT also highlighted the critical role of the PDP governors in the party’s success at the state level, stressing the need for greater collaboration.
“Our governors are the backbone of the PDP’s achievements. Their synergy is vital for our collective progress. We must embrace dialogue, cooperation, and shared responsibility as we navigate these difficult times,” he said.
As part of its commitment to restoring peace, the BoT announced its intention to re-engage Wike in January to seek lasting solutions to the crisis.
“The BoT remains steadfast in its pursuit of unity and peace within the PDP. Our renewed efforts will begin with a meeting with former Governor Nyesom Wike as part of our mission to resolve these conflicts and restore harmony to the party,” Wabara added.
