Ohanaeze Ndigbo Expresses Full Support for Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has pledged its strong backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills. The group commended the reforms for their potential to transform Nigeria’s economic landscape, with a particular focus on benefiting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and workers, while also addressing the persistent issue of double taxation.

In a statement issued on Sunday, December 1, 2024, and signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze described the reforms as a crucial step toward fostering fair economic growth.

“These tax reforms offer a significant opportunity to revitalize SMEs and improve the livelihoods of Nigerian workers. By eliminating double taxation, which has often been imposed by unscrupulous state governors, these reforms will create a more equitable business environment, fostering both local and foreign investments,” the statement read.

The group emphasized that the Igbo community, renowned for its entrepreneurial prowess, stands to benefit greatly from the proposed measures, which are expected to promote private sector growth and establish a fairer regulatory system.

Ohanaeze urged Southern lawmakers to set aside political differences and work together to ensure the smooth passage of the tax reforms in the National Assembly.

“It is critical that our Southern legislators unite beyond party lines to ensure the swift passage of the Tax Reforms Bills through both chambers of the National Assembly,” the organization stated.

The group expressed concern over opposition to the reforms from certain Northern governors and lawmakers, viewing it as an attempt to preserve the status quo in VAT distribution that favors select interests.

“If the Northern political elites succeed in blocking these reforms, it could create a dangerous precedent, stalling meaningful reforms and sustaining unfair practices,” Ohanaeze warned.

Ohanaeze reiterated its support for the Tinubu administration, pointing to its decision to refrain from participating in nationwide protests as a gesture of collaboration.

“The promise of a prosperous and just Nigeria is within reach, but it requires collective efforts to advocate for transparency, fairness, and sustainable economic progress,” the statement concluded.
