Nigerian Govt Announces Date for Next Census

The Federal Government of Nigeria has set 2025 as the year for the country’s next national census. This announcement was made by the Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, during the 2024 anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Abuja.

Kwarra explained that the prolonged delay in conducting the census has prevented Nigeria from accurately assessing its population needs and effectively distributing resources. He noted that the last census was conducted in 2006, 18 years ago, contrary to the United Nations’ recommendation for a 10-year interval between population counts.

Although the census was initially scheduled for 2023, it was postponed twice under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, despite funds being allocated for the exercise.

Kwarra stressed that the lack of updated population data has negatively impacted rural and underserved communities. “The absence of accurate data makes it difficult to design effective reproductive health services and interventions, hindering efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve access to family planning,” he said.

He also highlighted how the outdated data has slowed Nigeria’s progress in achieving social inclusion and equality.

“This gathering reaffirms our shared commitment to inclusivity, progress, and empowerment, particularly for women and young people. Our priority remains improving sexual and reproductive health, eradicating gender-based violence, and creating equal opportunities for all,” Kwarra added.
