Why Protest Alone Won’t Bring Change In Nigeria – Osibanjo

By Our Correspondent

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stressed the need for young people to transition from mere protests to active political participation to create lasting societal change.

Speaking at a conference on technology and governance in Lagos, he discussed how digital tools have empowered African youths to organize and voice their demands effectively.

Osinbajo pointed out that while protests can draw attention to pressing issues, they must be coupled with actions that produce tangible outcomes.

He emphasized that in societies struggling with poverty, prolonged protests can disrupt daily livelihoods, particularly for informal workers who depend on daily earnings.

He advocated for deeper involvement in politics, explaining that structural reforms and impactful policies require political power.

Drawing from his own experience, Osinbajo shared how his appointment as Lagos State Attorney-General enabled him to implement significant justice reforms, a feat he struggled to achieve as a university lecturer.

The event, organized by Enough is Enough (EiE) and BudgIT, explored how technology can shape political action across Africa, offering insights into its potential as a tool for governance and accountability.
