A tragic boat accident near Bennett Island in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State has claimed five lives, with one person still missing. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident, reporting that six people sustained injuries and are receiving treatment, while 19 others were rescued.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, provided an update on the situation: “Five found dead, six persons injured and still receiving treatment, nineteen persons rescued, and one still missing.”
In a separate incident, the police reported a shootout with robbery suspects in a bush near Warri, during which some gang members were killed. Firearms were also recovered in the operation.
Edafe detailed the sequence of events, revealing that a surveillance team from Ekpan Division arrested a 31-year-old suspect, Eto, near Effurun Roundabout. He was found in possession of 57 live cartridges. Following Eto’s confession, the police mobilized to the gang’s hideout at Coconut Village along Warri/Sapele Road near Mercy City, where another suspect, Sunny, aged 25, was apprehended.
The suspects subsequently led police operatives to their main camp, known as “Korodo,” located in a forest behind the 3 Battalion Barracks Army Estate in Effurun. The operation resulted in the recovery of arms and other items.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
