77-Year-Old Nigerian Uber Driver Killed in Philadelphia Shooting

A 77-year-old Nigerian Uber driver, Olatunji W. Bolaji, was fatally shot early Wednesday morning in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His 22-year-old passenger was also critically injured in the incident.

Reports suggest that Bolaji had picked up the passenger outside Byblos Hookah Bar near Rittenhouse Square at around 2 a.m. Shortly after the ride began, a black Jeep Grand Cherokee with Massachusetts plates followed Bolaji’s SUV. Two men then exited the Jeep, and one of them opened fire, shooting both Bolaji and his passenger.

Despite being shot in the head, Bolaji was able to drive a short distance before crashing into a pole at the intersection of 17th and Chestnut Streets, where he was declared dead at the scene. His passenger, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the arm, leg, and stomach, was rushed to Jefferson University Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Law enforcement is reviewing surveillance footage of the shooting as part of an investigation to identify the suspects. Authorities are exploring the possibility that the incident was preceded by a confrontation between the passenger and the assailants, but the exact motive remains unclear.

Uber has expressed condolences to Bolaji’s family, stating, “We are heartbroken by this devastating event and extend our deepest sympathy to the driver’s family and loved ones. We are working closely with the police to assist in their efforts to apprehend those responsible.”

Friends and neighbors have described Bolaji as a kind, hardworking man who was deeply devoted to his family. A longtime friend shared that Bolaji was a proud father, with his son having recently graduated from college.
