50-year-old drowns in Jigawa river

A 55-year-old man named Sulaiman Potiskum drowned while swimming in a river in Hadejia Local Government Area, Jigawa.

Badaruddeen Tijjani, spokesperson for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Jigawa Command, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday in Dutse. According to Tijjani, the tragedy occurred on Saturday at approximately 9:45 a.m. when Potiskum went swimming in the river.

“The incident involved Sulaiman Potiskum, 55, who drowned in a river at Gada, Bakin Kogi area of Hadejia,” Tijjani said. “He was initially taking a bath along the riverbank when he was overcome by strong waves.”

Tijjani added that NSCDC search teams and local divers attempted to rescue Potiskum, but he was pronounced dead by medical personnel at Hadejia General Hospital. The body has been returned to the family for burial.

The spokesperson urged residents to avoid swimming or fishing in rivers during periods of heavy rainfall, as rising water levels can be dangerous.
