The Nigeria Lawmakers Opposition Coalition has revealed that 40 members of the National Assembly and two additional state governors are planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This comes amid growing discontent with the leadership and direction of the party.
At a press conference held in Akokwa on Friday, the coalition’s spokesman, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, disclosed the plans, expressing frustration with the current state of the PDP.
He suggested that the party’s founding members would be ashamed of how the once-prominent organization has deteriorated under its current leadership.
Ugochinyere accused the PDP leadership of undermining the party and failing to resolve internal crises that have been ongoing for years.
He demanded the immediate dismissal of Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum and the expulsion of former Imo State governorship candidate Senator Samuel Anyanwu, as well as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The coalition also called for a new national chairman to be appointed from the North Central zone to help revive the party.
“For two years, the leadership of this party has failed to resolve its internal conflicts, actively damaging the platform that once brought them success,” Ugochinyere stated.
He criticized Damagum for invoking divine guidance while neglecting important decisions within the party, questioning his leadership during key moments. “Where was God when the North Central was excluded from the acting chairman position? Where was God when you supported APC defectors in court and handed party structures to APC members?” Ugochinyere asked.
Additionally, he questioned why Wike, who has openly cooperated with the APC-led federal government, continues to hold membership in the PDP.
In the same press conference, Ugochinyere highlighted the devastating erosion crisis affecting his constituency in Ideato. He praised the federal government’s intervention with a N25 billion project aimed at controlling erosion in Umuchima, but warned that other areas, especially the Umuechi-Urualla axis, remain critically threatened by erosion.
“The erosion is endangering key infrastructure, including St. Jude’s Catholic Church and the king’s palace,” he said. Ugochinyere revealed that a previous World Bank-funded erosion control project worth N9 billion was abandoned due to mismanagement, exacerbating the problem.
He called on the federal government and the Ministers of Works and Environment to take swift action, saying, “Please intervene and save our people from being cut off by this disastrous erosion.”
