The Yobe Police Command announced on Sunday the arrest of three vigilante members for allegedly stealing building materials in Damaturu, the state capital.
DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the command’s spokesman, confirmed the arrests in an interview with journalists. He identified the suspects as Ibrahim Mohammed, Hassan Umar, and Ali Yakubu. They were apprehended on June 27 after conspiring to break into a shop they were hired to guard.
The suspects will face charges of criminal conspiracy, house trespass, burglary, and receiving and trading in stolen property.
Abdulkarim noted that multiple complaints about the misconduct of vigilante members prompted the state Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, to call for a review of their registration.
“Recognizing their vital role in supporting security agencies in the fight against crime, this action is in response to numerous complaints about the behavior of some vigilante members,” he stated.
The spokesman revealed that the command is developing a strategic plan for proper documentation and supervision of vigilante activities by divisional police offices.
He urged the public to exercise caution when hiring personal security guards and to report any criminal behavior among vigilante members to the police. He also encouraged the public to report misconduct by security personnel to the state police headquarters or through a written complaint to the commissioner via the spokesman.
