An estimated 3 million followers of the Tijaniyya Islamic Sect from both within Nigeria and abroad converged on Katsina on Saturday to celebrate the Maulud of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass in 2026.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, held at Muhammad Dikko Stadium, was organised by the “Majma’u Ahbab Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass.” Sheikh Muhammad Hadi-Balarabe, Chairman of the organising committee, indicated that they anticipated around 4 million guests from all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and various countries in West and North Africa.
NAN gathered that nearly all hotel rooms in Katsina metropolis were fully booked by attendees, prompting some residents to open their homes to visitors as a gesture of hospitality. Others who could not afford hotel accommodation opted to sleep in the stadium, despite the chilly weather.
By 9 a.m. on Saturday, the stadium was already filled to capacity, with people occupying both the seats and the pitch, while all available surrounding spaces were also taken. The dual carriageway leading to the venue from the WTC roundabout to Barhin roundabout was packed with attendees.
The event also presented opportunities for traders, particularly those selling food, water, soft drinks, herbal medicine, clothing, and books, to engage in brisk business.
Addressing the large gathering, Sheikh Ibrahim Dahiru-Bauchi expressed gratitude to the Katsina State Government for hosting the historic event and prayed for lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the state, Northern Nigeria, and the nation as a whole.
In his remarks, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, urged Muslims to remain steadfast in obeying the commandments of their Creator. He encouraged them to intensify their efforts in seeking Allah’s forgiveness, to follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), and to pursue knowledge and self-reliance through business activities.
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina thanked the organisers for choosing his state to host the 2026 Maulud and appreciated the scholars for their prayers for peace and stability in both the state and the country. He noted that with such prayers, peace was gradually returning to Katsina and urged the community to continue praying for the overall betterment of Nigeria.
Sheikh Mahi Ibrahim-Nyass, the eldest son of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, represented by his younger brother Sheikh Muhammad Ibrahim-Nyass, prayed for the soul of the revered Islamic scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman-Bauchi, who passed away several months ago. He called on Muslims worldwide to remain united, love one another, and uphold the principles of their sect.
A special prayer was also offered for Katsina, Nigeria, and its leaders.
