2025 Budget: Fubara Says He Did Not Get Lawmakers’ Ultimatum Letter

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said that he has not received any letter from the Martin Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly giving him a 48-hour deadline to present the 2025 budget.

As the deadline reaches its final hours on Wednesday, March 5, the state government, through Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, stated in a letter to Speaker Amaewhule that no such letter has been received. According to Danagogo, neither the Governor’s office, the Deputy Governor’s office, nor the Accountant-General’s office has any record of receiving the document.

Fubara had earlier addressed the public in a state broadcast on Sunday, March 2, stating that, despite his views on the Supreme Court rulings, he would respect and follow the decisions of the court in the best interest of Rivers residents. He assured that his legal team was still awaiting certified copies of the judgment and that once received, he would ensure compliance.

Meanwhile, tensions in Rivers State have continued to rise, with Niger Delta leader and traditional ruler, Asari Dokubo, issuing a strong warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the 27 lawmakers. He cautioned them against any attempt to impeach Fubara, saying such a move could destabilize the state.

Dokubo made this statement during a live Facebook broadcast, stressing that removing Fubara from office could lead to serious political unrest. His warning follows the Supreme Court’s recognition of the 27 lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Their reinstatement has shifted the balance of power in the State Assembly, adding to the already heated political situation.

With the deadline now close, many in Rivers State are anxiously waiting to see what happens next.
