The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, accusing his administration of worsening the hardships faced by Nigerians in 2024 through poor policies and broken promises.
According to Politics Nigeria, Peter Ameh, CUPP’s National Secretary, described the President’s New Year’s Day address as disconnected from the harsh realities endured by citizens. “2024 was a nightmare for most Nigerians, caused by impulsive and poorly thought-out decisions from this government,” Ameh stated.
He criticized Tinubu’s claim of fighting corruption, referencing Nigeria’s abysmal ranking of 143rd out of 149 countries on the global corruption perception index as evidence of the administration’s failure.
Ameh also condemned the effects of the subsidy removal policy, which led to a 300% surge in public transportation costs. He described Tinubu’s anecdote about a friend downgrading from a Rolls Royce to a Honda as tone-deaf, considering that many Nigerians can no longer afford basic necessities.
“The cost of living has skyrocketed. Today, 129 million Nigerians—over half the population—are living below the poverty line,” Ameh said.
He dismissed Tinubu’s proposal to create a new agency to combat inflation, calling it redundant and a waste of resources. He noted that food inflation is at 80%, with no tangible steps from the administration to address the crisis.
Ameh further criticized the administration’s handling of Nigeria’s debt, which has ballooned from N87 trillion to over N130 trillion in just one year.
“The policies of this government are driving Nigerians into deeper poverty and despair,” Ameh declared, urging the administration to prioritize practical solutions over political rhetoric. The CUPP called for immediate action to address the economic and social challenges plaguing the nation.
