18-year-old girl sentenced to six months in prison for stealing N800,000

An 18-year-old girl, Zainab Adebayo, has been sentenced to six months in prison with hard labour by a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, for stealing N800,000 from her neighbour.

Court president O.E. Owoseni delivered the judgement, stating that Adebayo was convicted based on her guilty plea and evidence provided by the police.

The sentence, according to the court, is meant to serve as a warning to others.

Adebayo was given the option of serving six months of community service instead of imprisonment.

She may also avoid jail time by paying a fine of N200,000.

During the court session on Friday, the prosecution, led by Ayodele Ayeni, revealed that Adebayo committed the crime on March 28 in the Ologuneru area of Ibadan.

She broke into the bedroom of businesswoman Temitope Musbau and stole a piggy bank containing N500,000. She also took N150,000 in loose cash and perfumes worth another N150,000.
